Growing Pains

If you've ever been through that awkward phase where you're trying to grow your hair you'll understand my plight. It's not short anymore, it's not long yet, it doesn't have any shape, you don't know if it's better to get a trim once in a while, even if that means it going to take longer to grow, or just live with it hoping someday it will become more manageable...

That's the problem, my hair is unmanageable. No matter what. It's thin, coarse, straight and I have a lot of it (which, for a man my age is a heavenly blessing, that's the bright side). I can blow dry it, use a curling iron, gel it back, use hairspray, styling wax, and/or any combination of the aforementioned... and it will just go back to it's own rebellious natural state. And before you ask I also tried washing it and leave it dry naturally. It becomes a nice big fluffy cotton candy. The big truth is: it only starts looking good when I haven't washed it for two or three days, but I haven't managed to replicate the look with any of the products I've tried.

Because that's another thing... the products. I don't know if it's my impossible hair or the products that fail to live up to their promises. "Flexible hold" is an euphemism for "barely any hold" as far as I am concerned, and a hairspray that claims to "Disappear at the stroke of a brush" also disappears as soon as I run my fingers through my hair. "Strong hold" gels give my hair the texture of glue-dipped straw if I use too little or turns my hair into papier-maché if I use too much (my head is hard enough like that, thankyouverymuch) without achieving the desired effect, which is holding my hair in place. Even an "Indestructible" wax that didn't go away after THREE shampoos (and that I ended up throwing away) failed miserably. And yes, I've tried many, expensive salon products (with fancy mineral bases and organic plant extracts) and supermarket over-the-counter stuff, all in vain.

In the end the dilemma comes down to this: one day I think "what the hell" and want to cut it short, and the next I decide to be patient and wait a few months more see what happens. Why long (well, I'm not talking about loooong like down to my waist, maybe around the jawline and then we'll see), and why now? Well, I don't know, I've been wearing it long on top for a while and I'm curious to see what the rest of it can become, and I've never had it long except for a short "Kurt Cobain" phase in the mid-90's... or am I wasting my time and should I cut it? Oh, here we go again!

Si alguna vez habéis pasado por esa incómoda  fase en la que queríais dejaros crecer el pelo entendereis mi situación. Ya no está corto, todavía no está largo, no tiene forma, no se sabe si es mejor hacerse un arreglo de vez en cuando, aunque signifique que tardará más en crecer, o vivir con ello esperando que algún día sea más manejable...

Ese es el problema, mi pelo no es nada manejable. Haga lo que haga. Es fino, duro, liso y tengo mucho (lo cual, para un hombre de mi edad, es una bendición, es el lado positivo). Puedo usar secador, tenacillas, engominármelo, usar laca, cera, y/o cualquier combinación de los anteriores... y al poco tiempo volverá a su rebelde estado natural. Y antes de que me lo pregunteis, también he intentado lavármelo y dejarlo secar al aire, adquiere la suave textura del algodón de azúcar. La gran verdad es esta: solo empieza a estar bien cuando no me lo he lavado en dos o tres días, pero no he conseguido reproducir ese efecto con ninguno de los productos que he probado.

Porque esa es otra... los productos. No sé si es mi pelo imposible o los productos que no consiguen el efecto que prometen. "Fijación flexible" es un eufemismo para "Casi ninguna fijación" por lo que he podido comprobar en mí, y una a laca que anuncia que "Se elimina con un simple cepillado" también se elimina en cuanto me paso los dedos por el pelo. Los geles de "Fijación fuerte" dan a mi pelo una textura de estropajo encolado si uso poco o convierten mi cabeza en papier-maché si uso demasiasdo (mi cabeza ya es lo bastante dura, graciasperonogracias) sin conseguir el efecto deseado, que es mantener mi pelo en su sitio. Hasta una cera "Indestructible" que no se iba ni con TRES lavados (y que acabé tirando a la basura) fracasó miserablemente. Y sí, he probado muchos, los caros de peluquería (con compuestos minerales y extractos de plantas orgánicas) y los de perfumería de toda la vida, todo en vano.

Al final el dilema se reduce a esto: un día pienso "qué demonios" y quiero cortarlo corto, y al siguiente decido ser paciente y esperar unos meses a ver qué pasa. ¿Porqué largo (bueno, no me refiero a laaaaargo por la cintura, tal vez por la barbilla y luego ya veremos), y porqué ahora? Pues no sé, lo he llevado largo por arribe desde hace ya un tiempo y tengo curiosidad por ver qué pasa con el resto, y nunca lo he tenido largo excepto por una corta fase "Kurt Cobain" a mediados de los 90... ¿o estoy perdiendo el tiempo y debería cortarlo? ¡Oh, ya empezamos otra vez!

Thank you all for your comments, they're really helping me to go courageously through this phase. So I finally found something that actually helps: Khiel's Creme with Silk Groom. It tames the hair controlling the fluffiness and actually gives it that "second day" look without making it greasy...

Gracias a todos por vuestros comentarios, me están ayudando mucho a afrontar con valor esta fase. Al final he encontrado algo que funciona bastante bien: Creme with Silk Groom de Khiels. Deja el pelo más manejable y controla el volumen, y consigue ese efecto "segundo día" sin engrasarlo...
